JSE-listed Aspen Pharmacare has received approval from the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority and will start the release of the first commercial batches of human insulin manufactured for sale in South Africa, under a previously announced agreement with Novo Nordisk.

The products were manufactured at Aspen’s sterile finished dose form manufacturing facility in Gqeberha, in the Eastern Cape.

This milestone marks the beginning of commercialisation under Aspen’s human insulin contract manufacturing agreement.

In 2023, Aspen Pharmacare and wholly-owned South African subsidiary Aspen SA Operations concluded an agreement with global manufacturer of human insulin Novo Nordisk for the technical transfer and commercial manufacture of human insulins.

The collaboration allows for local production of human insulin in South Africa, to cater to the needs of people with diabetes in Africa.

Through the local conversion of the insulin into finished dose form vials by Aspen, the companies aim to jointly leverage opportunities to ensure a reliable supply of products in Africa.

At the time of announcing the agreement, Aspen said it would invest R6-billion in building the necessary facilities and implement related technologies to produce and supply an initial up to 16-million vials of insulin a year.
